OSIG GREEN CORNER.....Eco awareness

The OUTDOORS and ECO CONCERNS are inseparable and we at OSIG realize this. We have created a position that hopes to address these concerns and build programs within our group to get more people educated and aware of these concerns when they GET OUTDOORS. After all who wants to go swimming at a beach that is covered in rubbish or find a discarded cigarette when you are in snow covered mountains?? So get educated and get involved to make your time outside more fun!

Us and the Outdoors

There is an Eco liaison within Osig who works to keep our members updated about matters that concern the environment, as well as general flora and fauna information. Contact them at eco@outdoorsig.com

We often work in conjunction with the JET Eco SIG to get eco related events up and running. So check out their site at http://geocities.com/green_in_japan/

Eco events

-EARTH DAY EVENTS
Earth Day Events (April 22 weekend)
As OUTDOORSIG is all about the outdoors we try to take an active role in keeping our beautiful Earth clean. Beach and Hiking Trail Clean-ups anything goes...... How about starting an annual trail cleanup on your local mountain??? (it doesn't have to be on Earth Day)......
If you are thinking of organizing an Earth Day Event in your town....check out the awesome 'Earth Day Event Planner's Guide' on the ECOSIG website: http://geocities.com/green_in_japan/
IF YOU KNOW OF ANY OTHER ANNUAL EARTH DAY EVENTS........please contact us with the info: eco@outdoorsig.com

-ROLL YOUR OWN BLACKOUT
June 21 (every year)
One of the ECO-PROJECTS that OSIG takes part in.... What better way to help the earth (and consequently the outdoors) than to join people all over the world on the same day and use as little energy as possible. On June 21st (the first day of summer) turn off all your lights and electrical appliances .........and roll your own blackout.
For more info on the blackout check out: http://www.rollyourownblackout.com/index-blackout.html

-BICYCLE for EVERYONE'S EARTH (BEE) ECOSIG trip (from Aug thru Oct)
A multi-week trip for the eco-conscious and super genki!...travelling the entire length of Japan by bike to raise environmental awareness. The BEE Ride across Japan started in 1997 when a group of three ALTs rode their bicycles from Wakkanai, northern Hokkaido to Kagoshima, in southern Kyushu. The subsequent BEE Rides were equally successful. This year, get in on the Bicycle for Everyone's Earth.....no matter how small your contribution to the ride it would be much welcome.
Check out their website at: http://www.beejapan.org

-INTERNATIONAL BUY NOTHING DAY
Nov 23 (every year)
It's one of the ECO projects that OSIG has decided to support....Nov 23 every year....reminds us that the easiest way to reduce out collective environmental impact is to buy fewer things....a simple message. SO...on Nov 23rd try to buy nothing.
